The landscape concept inspiration for the Al-Haia Landscape derives from two very significant features of Saudi Arabian nature and culture. Firstly, there is the stark difference between its vast Desert Landscape as a result of its hot and dry climate and the localised Wadis and Oasis with their lush vegetation as a result of sufficient water supply, cultivation and protection from the harsh climate. Secondly, there is the technique of weaving the Bedouin Carpets which are being produced by nomadic or settled Bedouin Women on traditional ground looms. These sources of inspiration are then abstracted and overlayed on one another to create a unique landscape design.
The Oasis idea translates into small clusters of dense vegetation within perforated enclosures the size of a room. The carpet pattern easily translates into a grid holding together the site and sequences of paving patterns as well as ornamentation. The interaction of desert landscape and oasis is symbolized by the majority of the landscape areas being of low-intensity native planting that required minimal irrigation and small pockets of intense planting nestled inside the outdoor rooms. The enclosure will function as outdoor rooms with an improved ambient temperature through shade and active cooling.
In the process of evaluating all the aspects of the landscape such as functionality, access requirements, views and vistas, wind direction and sun path, water availability and climate adaptability, the landscape zoning is defined and translated into the landscape concept.
